What is a man?

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/04/14/new-nintendo-console-at-e3.aspx Exciting stuff, we finally have some Nintendo news. It's been speculated for a while, but Gameinformer seems to have confirmed it - a HD home console, with reports conflicted on whether it will be as powerful or more powerful than the PS3/Xbox 360 (which it should be since those are 6 years old...). Also of note is that the source claims that Nintendo is "doing this one right", and that it is "not a gimmick like the Wii". So, speculate away, I guess. What do you want to see on this console, in terms of software and hardware? |

HD with no gimmicks? That second thing's surely gotta be a lie. It's been so long I'd almost forgotten that Nintendo used to make consoles before they started having gimmicks. I'll be looking forward to seeing the new console. I want to see a new F-Zero game, since they seemed to bypass the series for the Wii. And as always a proper 3D Pokémon game would be nice, though I doubt it'll happen. |

I don't think Nintendo considers what they did with the wii not "doing it right". They're a company and they made a mountain of gold coins out of it. But maybe they looked at Kinect and thought mankind have taken gimmicks too far. |

I agree with Tiptup. I am hoping that Nintendo has realised they need to stop pandering to this concept of active family fun with a games console at the expense of graphics, games variety, audience and lifespan. As far as I can tell they need to make the jump from doing such ridiculous things to slightly more standard gaming recipes. :D |

I wouldn't mind if there is an expansion of motion technology for Nintendo's next generation. The Wii great as it has been was a risk and an experiment and that has paid off so I'd expect to have more polished motion sensing technology on top of amazing horsepower which will cause our jaws to drop ^_^ Can imagine it now; Zelda in HD :x |

To be honest with you, it sounds good, just too good to be true. I can imagine it being a good console, but I think it will do the same as my Wii, sit a corner and never be used until a decent game comes out for it. |

To be quite honest, I trust Nintendo with this. They're in the business and can know far more about what sells than analysts, or bloggers... |

I just think that, when the Wii 2 is released, Microsoft will go, let's steal an idea or two and make the Xbox 720 or whatever and cash in. Then a couple year's later Sony will go, hang on, our consoles a bit old now, so they make a new one by stealing ideas from the previous consoles and voila! PS4. Rinse and repeat. |

Even though they're going into HD now, it's unlikely they'll have the best graphics of the next generation consoles possibly by a long shot purely because they're releasing first. I can see Microsoft and Sony thinking "right, so that's the graphics/power we've got to beat with our next console" once the next Nintendo console is unveiled. I miss the days where the N64 was more powerful than the PSOne. |

The N64/PS1 battle wasn't that clear cut. While the N64 had better processing power, and hence could handle more polygons and usually higher FPS, the fact that the PS1 used discs instead of carts was a big thing. Consider OoT, it was on a 32MB cart. And that was considered large. Then consider that any PS1 game could go up to 700MB, which allowed for more detailed textures, as well as FMV and voice tracks (which many N64 ports lacked). Despite popular conception though, graphics have never really mattered. As the last three generations have shown (and despite what I just said), the least powerful console has won out. The PS1 beat the N64 and Saturn. The PS2 beat the Gamecube and Xbox. The Wii beats the 360 and PS3. There's just no correlation between power and sales. Not to mention the fact that if games get any more realistic we're going to slide down into uncanny valley... |

Yeah, but more power is always nice to have, even if it doesn't make much difference. :p |

I don't see why nintendo would go back to trying to appeal to gamers when appealing to your nan makes so much more money. |

I think it's more likely that someone ressurrected him first. Someone mysterious, controlling everything from behind the scenes with their unknown intentions. :suss: Are they friend or foe? |

The uncanny valley must be avoided at all costs... And the new lease of life this forum has had has been awesome ^_^ But yeah power means little if the games aren't appealing and for me personally Wii has won on that front. I've really enjoyed games on other consoles like Fallout 3 and Batman Arkham Asylum and I'm starting to get into PC gaming but this gen my most memorable moments have been with the Wii, inferior horsepower and all. |

That was my fault. I brought Cipher back. :^0 Anyway, back on topic. I say this new console is going to have to have a hell of a lot of draw to get me to buy it since the 360 has always been loyal and strangely reliable for me. :^0 |

That's the opposite for me, I found all the major franchises I'd previously enjoyed really disappointing on Wii (except for Mario Galaxy) and decided to get an Xbox360, something I'd never have considered during the Gamecube era. I only use the Wii to entertain guests now. |

I've actually got a lot of game time out of my Wii, granted some of that is GC games and ports but I absolutely loved the Likes of No More Heroes and the Resi Chronicles games as well as the big names such as Mario Galaxy and Metroid, so my Wii had had good use. Was a little disappointed with it at first as releases were a little sparse but I think it has now lived up to my expectations. Just need Nintendo to hit the ground running when it comes to the next gen. |
