Just been reading a few ign articles and it seems that a general consensus is that the Iphone/Ipad/Ipod touch with the introduction of 3GS (no clue what that is ?:/ ) could be the future kings of handheld gaming. Just wondering whether you think this is a possibility. Nintendo have ruled the handheld market for over 20 years and have defeated all challengers to its crown (SEGA GameGear, Sony PSP) but surely there will be a time when Nintendo's fdominance in this market falls if not in the foreseeable future. I have little doubt that the 3DS will be a massive success and I'ms ure Nintendo will no how to market it right e.g. reasonable price, adavertising but I've become increasingly aware of people at school using their Iphones/Ipod Touches as a wayto play games, more than I do playing a DS or PSP so is it possible for Apple to take over the market ?:/ I don't think they will/should because none on the games I've seen seem to offer anywhere near the depth of some of the oldest GB games such as Mario Land or Links Awakening despite the colour display and higher resolution graphics. As something to play on the train for 3 minute bursts I'm sure it's great but as a substantial gaming machine I don't think so. However with the ever increasing popularity of Apples products I can see a real if not deserved challenge to the handheld market. What do you guys think? |

I think the apple devices are successful as handheld entertainment, but not really gaming. You see people playing on them a lot because they are small and have may apps that you can just pick up and play for a few minutes at a time, try to beat a high score. This is why i'd categorise it differently. A proportion of DS games require hours to complete whereas these apps are just pick up and play fun. I don't think they need to compete, and I think the 3DS will show if they try they will get knocked off their feet, especially considering what the graphical capabilities of the 3DS have been to compared to. Also 3GS is the 3rd version of the iphone, 3G being a faster mobile phone signal enabling mobile internet where available. And the S is just a speedier firmware thingy from apple. :] |

Cheers for that Raz :) All this connection jargon confuses me :p But reading some places (ign) there seems to be a genuine belief that Apple can contest and win the handheld wars. |

*waltzes in* The thing with the iphone is that it is there, you already have it in your pocket. So when you go to play a game, you don't have to carry another console with you, it's all on your phone, just like how Snake back in the day was huge :P It's all a matter of convenience, in its current state apple gaming will not become a serious contender as is purely just something on the side, as Ryan said short bursts to pass time. Of course given the advancing hardware if someone does decide to start making serious games I can't see what would stop it from being successful other than maybe size restrictions and awkward controls. inb4applehate *waltzes out* |

I don't see Apple seriously challenging the gaming market, not this generation anyway, maybe in the future but not now. I just brought it up due to the idea that with the 3GS that Apple will be overtaking Nintentdo and Sony. |

I think price is quite a large barrier here tbh. No-one is going to buy an iPod/iPhone for gaming when they cost upwards of £200. Even the PSP on release only cost £180. IMO they're in different leagues to Sony and Nintendo, as everyone has said, it's just something that's "there"... |

The new iphone already has a farely powerful processor and IMO could churn out the same sort of graphics if not better than the ds at the very least. There isnt alot of bcking from developers at the moment unfortunately, but hopefully that will change in the near future. I cannot think of anything more perfect than my phone bieng able to do what my ds does and more. There just wouldnt be anything to match that. |

*ahem* Apple will never be a hardcore contender in the gaming market because they're a nightmare to develop for. That's why microsoft do so well, because they send out the source code to devs. Apple will do well on small-time devs, but no-one with the "real" (I use the word... Reservedly) talent will want to work for a company that shaft them at every step of the way. See: this gen compared to the last two. Nintendo are 3rd party friendly. Nintendo sell like hotcakes. |

So, how much does an iPhone cost? A lot in comparison to a DS or PSP I'm guessing. It doesn't seem to me that the price is worth warranting it as a decent gaming platform, especially when you consider that it lacks games developed by 'bigger' game developers. |

Wow a topic with activity other than the general chat thread :P I don't think the Iphone/Ipod can really compete with other gaming handhelds until one is released as a specialist gaming device. At the moment it is kind of a utility tool which can play games on it as opposed to a real contender top the market. Though I wouldn't be suprised if Apple does decide to go into the gaming business some time in the future. Also reminds me of an article I read earlier today: http://www.cubed3.com/news/14952 |

The iPhone isn't really that special when it comes to specs. My HTC Desire outpaces it everywhere but screen resolution. I feel no desire to play games on it though. I mean, sure, I've got Angry Birds on there, but I never make dedicated time to play it. In fact, the only thing I do use it for games-wise is emulation. It can emulate GBA games very well, so I just play FR... |

Those graphics are indeed impressive and the iphone is much more powerful than I gave it credit for, but lets see whether a game like that plays well without buttons :) I must admit I do use my mates iphone to play Robot Unicorn Attack :D |
