Why activision can quite frankly burn

This.

Now, I really have a problem with Kotick. I appreciate that cutthroat business tactics are hardly new in video games - Nintendo forcing devs to buy their carts to fund a game to avoid video game crashes was arguably somewhat cruel. But here's the thing... Nintendo are all about the niche titles and trying something new. Look at wii music. Yeah, it sucked. But it was something else in a sewage pipe of Halo-era FPSes. It wasn't edgy or dark, it was an attempt to be fun.

Kotick is the kind of person who only looks at a series or title for long-term worth. Would have have tried motion sensing or touch screens? No. Would he introduce paid-for mounts in WoW? Yeah, he did. Steve Jobs or Bill Gates may irk me... Kotick's very name is a cause of rage.

(And yes, I DO boycott Activision for this reason).

What a grade A douche bag X-( It makes me glad that I've never invested in Guitar Hero and Modern Warfare and I never will. Games are a business and businesses need to make profits it's how the system works but they are also about fun for those who play and make them. What he wants to do is just get rid of innovation from a market already being saturated with samey FPSes. He can take Black Ops and blow it out his anus if he does indeed have an anus X-(

The thing about video games being a business is that YES, they are a business.

But his model isn't even sustainable. People will get bored of rehashes, eventually.

I hope.

I do know a lot of people who still play Halo 3.

Also from the looks of it he wants to make games so expensive no one can actually afford them :| I'd say I want Activision to crash and burn but then I remember that the people who you know actually makes the games which allow companies to make money probably do want to try new things and are the ones who'll suffer if the activision went bust.

And I haven't even completed the first level of Halo 3, I just didn't find it fun. It's Tales of Vesperia and Portal all the way for me on Xbox.

This is old news (the post is dated September 9th) and as I recall he recently gave a speech apologising for his actions, and was relatively sincere.

Of course, his business practices haven't changed.

Activision is definitely the new EA though. Them or Ubisoft anyway, their DRM system is worse than the worst kinds of SecuROM. It is funny though how now EA are actually quite a good company, putting out new IPs and stuff...

EA got a bit of an unfair press. I don't like sports games, but I can't deny EA sports titles tend to be fairly solid. Plus, they were developing mostly for the PS2 and, without sound too much like a fanboy, when you're developing for a console like the playstation and want to stay strong, you can't afford to be zany. The playstation isn't designed to be for zany people. The eyetoy was a massive flop. It was popular, but not accessible like the wii.

The problem with activision, and the difference, is that at the moment the way video games are played is changing. For better or worse. As he admits, he isn't using this to the effect of finding those new ways. But like you said, the practice hasn't changed. If activision start becoming a warm, fuzzy company with a real compassion for their devs, then obviously I'll shift on this. But as it stands, it all continues to look like rehashing the same old games with no changes.

Now there's the question of what the market want, but what the market want is often influenced more by what devs bother to try with than any actual aim. No-one cared about games like guitar hero until the third one was so well-advertised. (Guitar Hero I barely sold at all).

Would like 'http://outpostgamez.com/video/60/mw2-the-video-iw-and-activision-dont-want-you-to-see/' to not 500 on me. :[
Also as the (old) article says, he just doesn't give a f*** and knows it, because it doesn't matter. Activision SHOULD fear making games. Because they've got to better themselves rather than thinking of new stuff. :p

I think he can't comprehend the fact HL2 has a story. :p

Half-Life 2 is far better than Modern Warfare in terms of singleplayer, at least. Modern Warfare is nothing more than a cheap thrill. Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, I don't care about; If this counts, Counter-Strike: Source is better than Modern Warface's multiplayer, IMO.

I just don't really see the appeal of MW2 and why it's online multiplayer is so highly thought of :| It just seems like the standard multiplayer stuff you get in any FPS i.e. Halo.

It's because no-one cares about quality anymore. Everyone just wants the same generic shooter over, and over again.

I'm a fan of the FPS genre, and I only agree with that statement to a small extent. Sure, a lot of people buy into same-old shooting games like CoD and Halo that don't really bring anything exciting to the market, but not everyone wants generic shooters to rule the market. People Can Fly are FPS devs who stray from making the "generic" shooter that you recognise, and are in the middle of developing Bulletstorm, which has a Serious Sam-esque feel to it; definitely not to be associated as generic. And I don't need to mention Valve.

If anything, you could say we get the same JRPGs with angst-filled teenage protagonists partnered with wide-eyed crazy-hair anime-styled friends over, and over again.

I guess you have a point PJI but that deoesn't really make it really any less tedious :| The JRPG genre is definetly at standstill at the moment in terms of innovation but Square have at least tried something different with some of their efforts such as The Word Ends With You and from what I've played from FF13 most of the cast seems to be at least over 20 ;) and you usually need to wait around 2-4 years for the next main Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest/Tales games where CoD now is an annual event; It is kinda replacing Fifa and Pro Evo in that regard :|
