Anyone else build their own computers?

Do not try and eat the cake, only try and realise the truth.
I'm intending to build a new one over summer since this one sucks so hard I don't even want to say the specs. ¬_¬

But yeah, anyone else do this somewhat eccentric I suppose but easy passtime?

I know Col does, so you'd be best off speaking to him. I'm considering one tbh. That or paying someone to build one for me. Sure, my laptop is high-end, and will run most games, but usually only on medium-low graphics or windowed or whatever. It's not a bad graphics card, but just not awesome either...

I didnt build mine, but the specs arent to bad, could do with some more RAM, but I did buy myself a graphic card, if it always comes to it, you can always just steal the list of components valve used for their last line of PC's for testing, they may ahve got rid of them a year ago, but the specs are still up to todays standards, the ones they use now are stupidly amazing though, and probably expensive.

I've built my own PC, but honestly, I'm not an expert. I've only done it once, and only upgraded it once (installed new RAM which is simply plug in and play, so that doesn't really count all that much).

You visit 4chan right? Go to /g/, they know their stuff.

I hang out in /g/.
I ought to clarify, I do build PCs out of boredom sometimes... Or take them apart and put them back together. Fun times.

I wonder if anyone else does :D

My Brother is big on building PC's, he has spent most of his wages over the past several months building his Dream Machine and it is a beast, i will get the specs for you guys later but quite frankly i believe his PC is Overkill. :^0

Panic!
I've built a few PCs for some of my friends. I just get the parts off eBay as long as they don't mind waiting a few weeks; but if you can't do eBay, I recommend a place called Digital Promo for parts.

All the parts I've ordered from Aria have arrived today (waiting for the case, PSU, and OS to arrive from different sites). It was all good until I realised that I ordered a DVD-ROM drive instead of a DVD-RW. Then I thought, "f***, why don't I just swap the DVD-RW drive in this old computer with the new DVD-ROM I stupidly bought?". So I did. And it was pretty easy.

I feel like I've cheated in getting a DVD-RW for my new computer-to-be, but I don't give a f***.

Oh, and Aria treated me to a free 2GB USB flash drive. Woo.

Why have I not noticed this topic until now?

I'm always tinkering inside my computer, and would much rather build one than buy one. So much better value for money, and you get exactly what you want/need.

PJI, if you sign up to the Aria Forums and put me as your referral, I might get something back, even if it is just a thanks from the owner, who actively participates on the forum. Also, if you sign up to the forum and post a minimum of 50 posts per month, you get free delivery for the following month. Pretty good deal for me because otherwise it's £6.99 for delivery. :o

Aria like their loyalty incentives and if you spend £400 in one order with them (I think), they'll send you a present. If you didn't order the pen drive, I'm assuming that must be your present.

My computer is technically getting old now, but it still runs all my games on very high settings and I can't afford an upgrade at the moment anyway, so I won't be upgrading. Might instead opt for a cheap upgrade to my cooling and then just overclock instead of upgrading the whole system.

I made the favicons on Aria's site and forum. Won a NAS drive for that. :)

Cool, the pressie would have been that USB pen I got then. Should be useful for when I'm back in college.

And Col, I'm signing up to the Aria forums. I need to know your username there so I can add you as my referrer.

Both the anti-static wrist strap and Windows 7 OEM have arrived in the post today. Now I'm just waiting for ebuyer to deliver the case and PSU, then I'm all set to build it. I'll keep this topic updated with my progress on my new computer.

You may have seen on the Aria forums, people doing build logs. ie. writing about each step as they build the computer, some have pictures. You could do that!

In answer to what you said on the general chat thread Pete, you CAN use tri-channel RAM on a dual-channel mobo, you just lose a bit. I'll go for dual-DDR3 if the loss is that big, but really, what your OS and processor can dip into tends to make a bigger difference.

Triple channel doesn't have much of a benefit over dual channel from what I've read, but you'll still be able to use all three sticks. It's just that two of them will be running dual channel and the third won't. That's all.

Did you opt for free delivery? If so, they usually tell you to wait five working days.

Yeah, free delivery. I ordered everything on Monday, and seeing as everything else arrived within 2-3 days when I also opted for free delivery from the other sites, I sorta expected it to at least arrive today. Oh well.
