Aha! An opportunity to brandish my English language AS around like it was worth taking! :D English is a varied, complex and constantly changing language, and you are right, there is no "correct english". What we call the "Queen's English" is a combination of 'standard english (a dialect)' and 'received pronunciation (an accent)' which originate from the upper classes of oxford and southern england. Both were taught in public schools. They still teach standard english at school, but they don't try and teach pronunciation anymore. Standard english is good because if everybody knows it, two people can communicate easily who are from two completely different places and backgrounds. However whether or not your english is "correct" depends on the context in which you speak it. For example if you were a Geordie and spoke in a thick Newcastle accent and dialect to somebody from London who couldn't understand a word you're saying, you would be speaking english incorrectly. In turn, if they spoke with a thick South London pronunciation and dialect back in a way you couldn't understand, that is also incorrect (this is when standard english would be correct). Of course, if you're a Geordie talking to a Geordie in a Newcastle dialect, that is correct english. In fact the Queen in recent years has had give her christmas speech in a slightly less upper class accent because they way she spoke was excluding some of her audience; she was using incorrect english. This forum seems to support using standard english which is for the best, but iF wE WEr On a fORUm whEr LiTrILYEvRY1 tyPEd like dIs deN DAT wUlD bCUm cORrECt eNgLiSh Nd SuM1 WhO CaMe ANd typed like this would be using "incorrect english". That's what the syllabus said anyway, heh. New methods of communication and media like television and internet are closing the gap in dialects though so it's likely that they are starting to differ less between regions, and we're also more exposed to different pronunciations so that too is becoming less of a problem. I would say that in the future we may end up all speaking in the same accent and dialect, but people are so loyal to their places of origin that we'd probably purposefully stop that from happening :p Ok I just released how long that was and how the post i quoted is from two weeks ago, and this is a topic about kinect, so i'll make it smaller :p Anyway yeah picollo no. is right, these Microsoft fanboys are lame. We liked motion control BEFORE it was cool, and then we came to resent it slightly before they've even had a chance to. We're awesome :D Edited by Tiptup, Jun 30 2010, 08:51 PM.

Well that was fascinating. Now if a syllabus could teach people to recognise irony, we'd be in business. |

Yeah, cheers. Surprisingly I did actually see through your subtle irony there; but I felt that now we'd all had a laugh, it was time to learn. I also thought since the topic had cropped up (albeit a fortnight ago, and a joke) I could show myself there was a reason for spending a year doing an additional AS in a subject I wasn't really that interested in, so i just let it all out... |

I ah... Became a PCfag. But I still like the xbox as a source of games that can't be on the wii/don't work on PC. Assassin's creed, banjo kazooie, dead rising, etc. I try not to go on xbox live much. I like the xbox, but I don't love it like say... Gamecube. (Y) |

They price has been announced; Kinnect will cost £129.99 :| I'm not sure if that is overpriced but it is definately out of my range. P.S. Also try to ignore any stupidity in the article/comments page unless you really fancy raging ;) |

Can't see that happening at all, tbh. Guitar Hero and Rock Band have spent too much time and money to just do away with the plastic controllers. They try to encourage actually picking up a real instrument after playing their games, so I doubt they will move away entirely as such. |

It turns out that (from what ive seen) the kinect sensor is no more than a peripheral for dance and gym games. Not a bad thing, but deffinitely not worth the hype it recieved. Its not far off the same thing as rock band or guitar hero if you think about it and just as pricey! :S |

Played one on that racing game it has. It wasn't brilliant, didn't think it sensed everything properly, but to be fair, we were in the middle of a shop. It's something I'd play at a friends house, but not something I'd actually buy. |
