Revising and Procrastinating

So we're knee-deep in exam season. Obviously many of us should be revising.

Two questions then. First, how do you revise, what are your techniques, etc? Can you revise with music on, or do you need silence? What time is best?

Secondly, what do you do when you're procrastinating? What new interests have you suddenly gained when you should be working, that then need to be fully researched?

Well I've got an exam in 4 days and going on holiday was my idea. But seriously the little revision I do never seems to pay off until my last exam which was quite successful, I hope. So i'll be reading through the books college supplies and hoping it sinks right it. Though I went to extra first year classes for this next exam because its a first year resit. =D

Normally I revise with music, reading from notes and writing stuff down to get it in my head. Otherwise, I'll revise with friends.

However, when I'm procrastinating (Most of the time), I will write stuff for EotD or doodle. XD

I'm revising right now. Or I'm supposed to be. Exams every day for the next week, and a few in the following weeks. I need silence, but the only way to achieve this in my house is to put on music which I then forget is on. I also watch films while revising, and it's surprisingly helpful, somehow. For example; if I think of a segment from the film, I remember the thing I was revising. It ruins the film, but it's pretty useful.

I like cue cards when I'm revising Classical Civ - event on the front, date or quote on the back. I find music in the background helps me concentrate a bit more, so long as its instrumental - lyrics distract my thinking. I don't have a particular time of day to revise, just so long as I don't start until I've properly woken up and had something to eat. In the past I've always left revision until the days before an exam, but since the upcoming exams are the only shot I get at the three A grades I need, I've started to revise at least a week to a week and a half before the exam. Much earlier and it'll just need to be revised again.

As for procrastination, I started watching House and Fringe as a result of putting off work. I started this thread as a result of putting off work. I've deeply researched things I'll probably never think about again, from card magic to LARPing. Ah well I've started early enough for it to not be a big issue.

Back when I used to revise I'd do a system of twenty minutes on, ten minutes off, over the course of an hour and a half, then give myself an hour break. So in the hour and a half I'd get an hour of revision done, but it'd ensure I was never too bored as my next break was only ever twenty minutes away at most. I'd usually do this three times, so I'd get three hours a day done. That was a lot for me, but it got me AA(A)Ba in the end, so not complaining :p .

These days I don't tend to bother with a schedule like that as I have much less to revise. In a "theory" subject like politics there's much fewer "facts" to remember, it's more about ideas and analysis...

Probably the best revision method for me is usually to do practice/past papers the day before or on the day of the exam. Sometimes two days before though. If you can do the practice questions, the exam ones'll be similarly doable.
Not that it really matters for a few months now though, as I had my last exam for year 2 on friday. ^_^

Procrastination for me is pretty much anything I like to do. ;) Depends what I feel like doing at the time.

I just read through my text books and notes, as that is how I revise best :) May not be the most effective way but it has done me well in the past. I usually prefer having some noise in the background but I find music too distracting at times, so what I like to do is to play my Dad's old Hitchhikers CD's where I find the soothing voice of Peter Jones is great for helping me concentrate :p

Procrastination for me recently is TV Tropes :| Seriously it is so easy to lose your life there because it starts off with one trope but then another catches your eye and so on until you feel a need to read every trope there is which is an impossible task

Well, I probably did really badly on my first Maths exam. I revised thoroughly, just not on the right topics. Fairly confident about English Literature, Classics, and History, though.

I barely did any revision when I was doing my GCSEs. I found that it didn't help much. I typically remembered what to do just be seeing a visual cue, like a familiar diagram or image. Still did good enough to get into college.

Good luck with those.

I have 5 exams left, 3 of which matter. Augustus tomorrow (so I need to frantically progress through my notes on his foreign policy and succession planning today, as well as learn enough quotes from Suetonius and the Res Gestae, to complete the revision), then Physics, and Tiberius and Claudius, on Friday (which I'm very worried I won't be able to fully revise for in the short time between). I'd best start now. :(

Only got my Maths and German results back so far (these aren't all proper GCSEs - only 3 are), but I didn't do as a badly as I thought in Maths as I was 4th in the class with 72%, and top in German with 38/40.

I think I must have done really badly in my Biology GCSE though; that wasn't science, damnit!
Now revising for a chemistry GCSE. Well, I'm supposed to be, anyway.

My exams won't be done till June 26th :( . Later than A levels AND GCSEs! Stupid Politics department. It's mad, we have virtually no work spread out over the entire year. In terms of actual contact hours we have less than a week's worth this term, around 35. And yet our exams come last! Physics, with their 20+ hours per week, are already finished!...

I won't be done 'til June 28th. Though I don't need the grade in Further Maths, so that exam doesn't matter as much as this week's three.
