I mean really, were they?

In some ways, yes. In some ways, no. Things were different. If we're talking vidya, we tend to associate older games with our childhoods, nice feelings. For example, I dare you to listen to this and not regress a little.

Strange really, I, or rather my brother, got Pokémon Red for Christmas 1999. Arguably my worst Christmas ever. Ah well...

And the above pretty much summarises the difference between old and now.

I like to think things were better back then. Recently I've been playing some retro games such as Zelda OoA, Resi 2 and the Jak and Daxter games (which are really nostalgic for me) and I've been enjoying them a lot and they are some of the most fun I've had with videogames in ages. Then again we were more easily impressed back then, than we are now so things just don't seem so magical. Still in some ways games are as good as ever for example Fallout 3 is one of the best games I've ever played and easily makes my top 5.

I know what you mean by games not being as magical. I remember blasting through pokemon ruby in the summer of '03 with my brother and only stopping playing the game because we had to recharge batteries. But when we got pokemon pearl and diamond it just wasn't the same. I sat in my bedroom playing it by myself while my brother didn't play it as much (mainly because he's 2 years older) and he was out with friends sometimes. Just not the same. I don't know if the reason i don't like pearl and diamond as much as the previous entries is because the excitement wasn't there because I was older or the games themselves weren't as good. I don't think I'll ever play through a game with as much enthusiasm as I did with ruby, silver or blue. I just miss the good old days of gaming when all 4 of us brothers were huddled round mortal combat, tekken, quake 2, timesplitters 2 or mariokart. I'm pretty sure my childhood has ended.

Oh yeah, games were definitely better 'back then'. That's why they remake old games.

If I go back and play games I have, it'll be the old classics - Grandia (you know how I feel about that though :p ), Jade Cocoon, Tetris, Pokemon Trading Card Game, Ristar, Rocket Knight Adventures, etc - that interest me most.

That's probably just my taste though. There's a lot of charm in the sound of the Gameboys, and the ol' Sega Megadrive. The outdated but still charming sprites of Pokemon Red. Platforming action like nothing today. A real sense of achievement from finally beating the last boss.

Modern games lack much of this. Yes, Final Fantasy 13 has 'good' and 'near-realistic' graphics. But where's the charm? I hold sprited settings that don't worry about realism in equal regard to anything modern. Many games now go for an orchestral, 'epic' (a much overused word) soundtrack, but I equally like to listen to memorable melodies on older hardware.

There's a reason they remake games. A reason Mega Man 9 was made as it is. A reason classic franchises like Metroid, Castlevania and Zelda are still around. Many gamers are still inspired by generations that are long past (relatively speaking), and with good reason.

'Back in my day...'

I love you NoE2, I made this thread referring to bugger all. :x

Basically, agreed generally.

That said, I was never massively wowed by pokémon. I liked them, but to me the generations haven't deviated from the standard formula quite THAT much.

Also, you are now thinking about the FIRST TIME you entered hyrule field on OoT.

Yeah, you would have been through it at least twice.

Things were generally better back then, but some things are good now too. But also a lot of things are complete bull now. -.-

Buying it? Nah I'm not paying for 3 games I already have. I did consider it a while ago, but then I replayed Prime and realised the control scheme's fine as it is.

This.

Though I might buy it with my brother's money to see how it plays.

I'll be buying it definitely. Might ask for it for Christmas to save money though. :p
Since my Wii's data was wiped a few years ago when it was fixed, I've not played Corruption through again, plus I sold my copy of Echoes (which I regret) and completed a borrowed copy of Prime in the first place, so I'll be getting it and playing through them all again in order and selling my copy of Corruption. ^_^

I had to cheat to finish Prime (spank me) I managed prime 2 all by myself but the disc was crap and I had to keep opening the disc draw and shutting it between each room or it would DRE on me so that wasn't enjoyable. The gap between me finishing prime 2 and starting corruption was too big so I didn't really enjoy what I did play of it.
Is that enough of an excuse to spend Ł40 of a week's wages? ;)
