...I wanna have words with your dealer Shifts

Nintendo are dropping the RRP of the 3DS to £155 effective August 11th, just to wind up all those that paid £230 for their's, apparently.
However, to sweeten the blow, anyone who visits the 'eShop' gets a ton of free downloads, Sony style.

Metroid: Other M is definitely looking nice. The first trailer, I didn't like because of Team Ninja being involved, and the game looked too action-y for it's own good. The E3 2010 trailer, however, cleared most my skepticism. It's still not the Metroid game I want, but it will be a nice distraction until Metroid 5 comes along (If Nintendo ever decides to make it).

It is looking really good now :) Before I was sceptical because I trhought it wa smainly going to be action and stuff but it seems there will be exploration still and it looks like they've been working on the atmosphere and from what I've heard the music sounds like it will be awesome.

I've got it pre-ordered, and I'm really looking forward to it. Apparently there's a playthrough in progress on Youtube because the game's been leaked, but no way I'm spoiling it for myself...

Just read the ign review. They gave it an 8.5 and praised it as a step forward for presentation in a Nintendo game but felt some things were a little forced in getting it to play solely on a Wii remote. Hopefully if this is a success we can expect even more epic and dramatic things from Nintendo :) Just keep voice acting out of Zelda and I'm sold.

Supposedly the story makes Samus seem extremely weak - a newbie even though she has defeated the Mother Brain and Ridley at least twice previously, and subservient to Adam despite the fact she's established as a strong female lead throughout the rest of the franchise.

Still, I'm more interested in gameplay and atmosphere than the plot. That said, a poor plot could definately leave a sour aftertaste regardless of gameplay.

I think the story will be good enough and I guess Samus beng subservient to Adam could make sense especially when playing Fusion where it states that she had a lot of respect for him.

Could anyone could tell me what the Metroid chronology is? Just wondeirng where this game fits in :| It's after Super Metroid I know but is that before or after Prime?

Right, from what I remember it goes like this:

Metroid

Metroid: Zero Mission (The bit with the gravity suit and Space Pirate ship at the end is added, otherwise its Metroid)

Metroid Prime

Metroid Prime Pinball (Retold Metroid Prime, in pinball format according to wikipedia)

Metroid Prime: Hunters

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Metroid II: Return of Samus

Super Metroid

Metroid: Other M comes in here :)

Metroid Fusion

I've completed Other M now (well, not 100% items but that stuff bores me) so I feel like writing what I thought were the good and bad points.

GOOD: Samus' emotional characterisation is actually okay. After maybe the first hour, once you get used to the controls, the gameplay is very good. The bosses generally look good, and most are great fights. The enemies look good. The story isn't amazing, but I enjoyed it. The areas are nice enough, and quite varied (ice, fire, jungle, ship). Having Adam give permission to unlock equipment isn't too bad, though it takes away the feeling of discovering a new powerup and thinking back on the areas you can now visit.

BAD: There are some horrible sections which force you into first-person mode and expect you to focus on a particular thing, though you have to figure out what it is yourself. Many are noticeable but some are extremely annoying - I did have to check one online after 15 minutes of failure. As well as this there are some scenes where, for no reason as far as I can tell, the camera changes to an over-the-shoulder view, and Samus walks painfully slowly. These are rare, but annoying, especially if you end up taking a wrong turn and have to backtrack a little. The music is unnoticeable, which, after experiencing the Prime trilogy, is disappointing (though there is the grand return of one classic track). The last boss(es) are underwhelming. The game is very short.

Overall I'd say it was good, but not worth the retail price I paid. Once I got into it, the gameplay was really fun, and fast, and I loved the satisfying sound effect when I locked onto an enemy in first person. It was just... too short. Since my only other experience of the Metroid series has been the Prime games, I can't help but compare Other M to them, and generally the comparison is negative - the levels are nice, but they can't live up to the beauty of Phendrana or Skytown, or the mystery of the Sky Fortress. The music is barely there since they're gone for a generic movie-style orchestral soundtrack like so many games do these days. I'd say the boss fights are just as fun though, and much better than the dull Prime 3 bosses (excluding Meta-Ridley and Rundas of course).

So, I'd say rent it and you won't be disappointed. Unless you're a fanboy who takes the game's failings as a personal insult.

Haven't played it yet but from what I hear it is f standard Metroid length. With the 2D games you'll often finish them in about 5-6 hours and there are also incentives for doing it in less than 2. If what you say about the soundtrack is true though then I'll be very disappointed as Metroid always has very atmospheric music.

I do intendo tp buy it soon despite some of the annoying looking bits. Also I'm not a massive Metroid fan (at least not in the same way as Zelda) so I won't take the failings too personally :p
