Welcome to one of my Zelda reviews, this one being of the original version on the NES first released in 1986 but since it has been available on the GBA as art of the NES Classic series (2004) and released on the Wii's virtual console (2006), there is no shortage of versions and any Zelda fan will find it easy to track it down. The story is simple (as was probably the case with many games of that era), the evil wizard Ganon who wielded the Triforce of Power also wished to have the Triforce of Wisdom held by Orincess Zelda, so Ganon attacked Zelda to retrieve it but before he could lay his hands on it Zelda smashed it into seven pieces scattered all over the overworld. Enraged Ganon help Zelda prisoner and with the help of his minions tries to hunt down the scattered pieces. But it's not all hopeless Zelda's maid Impa escpaes though is fataly wounded when she runs into Ganon's henchmen, but luckily she meets a young man named Link who she entrusts to find all pieces of the TRiforce and to defeat Ganon. You'll not hear anything about the story outside the games manual or the intro which plays after a while on the title screen. It's hardly ground breaking stuff but you'll just have to remember when this game was made and focus on it's gameplay. The game is played in a top down view which wa squite something at the time when most games were lside scrollings. The world was surely something revolutionary, it contained a massive world to explore and within it lied many secrets which could help you in your adventures. The world also contains 8 dungeons which contains enemies, traps and puzzles for you to solve, with a boss at the end which awards you a piece of the Triforce. It's the template which every Zelda has followed ever since (the only one to deviate is Zelda two but thats mainly due to the perpective and RPG like features) which is a testament to the impact it had. And even today the gameplay still holds up and any Zelda fan should at least give this game a try. The graphics for this game hardly need to be mentioned as it's an aspect which doesn't really matter. It's an old game therefore looks old, no point going into detail but for the time it could possibly have been quite a pretty game. The same with the music, it's limited by it's age but some of the tunes in there are classical and you'll recognise some of the sound effects from recent games. In conclusion this game is great fun and can provide a decent challenge for those who find recent Zelda games a bit on the easy side, you'll notice that it's age dbut that should stop you recognising that it's plain and simple fun which back in the day was what games were all about. 85% |

Just pointing out an error, you said that it's isometric. It's not, it's top-down. Isometric is the pseudo-3D you'd get on the GBA, where rooms etc were in a diamond shape and you view from an angle slightly above and to the bottom of them... |

Its the legend of Zelda, and its really rad. Those beasts of Ganon, are pretty bad :| Erm, yeah, good review. I just don't like having to use the Collectors disk to play it, as there's too much temptation to play Majora's Mask. Maybe one day... |

Oh no the Zelda rap :0 Yeah Majora's Mask is always tempting, though such a shame they did such a bad job of emulating it on the Collectors disk. Never thought I'd say this but I don't know why they couldn't of done a straight forward port :| |

Exactly. It kept freezing as I entered Clock Town the first two times. Mind you, the N64 version was just as glitchy. I tried it a few weeks ago and it started glitching in the opening movie. Link went upsidedown at points, and the speech was all &'s, and it went MEEEEEEEEEER a lot. That was only once though. So I guess its a hard thing to do :p |

Never knew the N64 version was as bad as I've only played the GC version, you learn something new everyday :) Though this is going on a slight tangent as this is a review for LoZ. Perhaps it be best if future discussions be held on the MM review, it needs some lovin' :D |
