A lot of you realise that I'm incredibly hyped over the sequel for this game on Wii and I've tried my best to keep up with all the updates and I've decided to write a review for the original on GC so those of you who haven't played the it will realise just how excited I amfor the sequel. The story of this game is just the personification of clichéd. It's set in the land of Sylverant in an underdeveloped world full of discrimination against Half-Elves and under constant fear of the mighty Desians a fascist group of Half-Elves which imprisons humans in work camps and experiments on them. In these dire times a young girl called Colette is picked as the Chosen by the heavens to go on a journey of regeneration across the world. For the majority you'll probably play as Llyod (but you can be any character in your current party) a young man with a strong sense of justice and is the typical angry idiot of the group whose parents were apparently killed by the Desians. So far so Cliché and it only gets even more so but despite that the story is still very charming and well told and there's plebty of twists and turns along the way and despite the colourful world the game can be very dark on ocassions but there is still plenty of humour in there and a bit of it from the characters making fun out of each others cliché phrases. The characters are also excellent, everyone of them recieving time in the spotlight and developed extremely well, especially if you take your time to do the sidequests. You'll undoubtedly have your favourites and there will be those which annoy you but you'll still feel engaged by their plight. The game features a real time battle system (a staple pf the Tales series) which has you playing on a 2D plane. The system enables you to pull of a number of combo's and special moves which you can alocate to different button commands. It is possible to butto mash your way through the game but thsoe of you who can be bothered to master the system will be stringing together higher combo's which will award you with more grade which unlocks a host of nice extra's at the end. The battle sytem is incredibly fun and each character has their own unique moves and all control differently so you can spend plenty of time working out who works best for you. It's also nice that tehre are no random battles all enemies appear on scream and battle only engages when you make contact with them which takes away a lot of the annoyance found with other RPG's where you are disrupted every few steps for a battle. Gameplay outside battle is pretty standard stuff you guide your character through villages and (a very ugly) overworld to reach dungeons which consist of puzzles (some of which quite tricky at the end) which involve a little tool you find early on called the sorcerors ring, until you end up with a boss fight at the end. All pretty standard but the puzzles help shak it up a bit so it doesn't end up as a mindless trawl through similar looking corridors. I'd sa there is about 45 hours worth of story time but you can easily get thaty up to 80 hours by playing all the side quests which will net ypu with some sweet equipment and moves and also does a lot to develop your band of character so all worthwhile. Probably one of the most rewarding is the one where you have to track down several cursed weapons to fight Abyssion who is an incredibly cahallenging boss. The game features a unique cel-shading look which is really quite nice. The characters are all nicely detailed and some of the towns and cities look stunning but it can look a bit basic at occassions especially some of the characters facial animations and especially the overworld which is on the edge of being ugly but overall it all looks rathe rpleasing. The sound too is also quite good, voice acting all round is very good and really brings the characters alive and the music too is mostly good though perhaps not as memeorable as it could be but again it helps bring the rather giant gameworld alive. This is one of those games where you'll either love it, hate it or find it a bit meh but I'm proudly on the love it side. It's an epic adventure which ticks all the box's for a good RPG and will probably always be one of my favourite games. 94% |

Bah! Tales Of Vesperia looks much better than Symphonia 2. It had better be, anyway. Otherwise I'll sell the 360 right away. The one thing that annoyed me was the way that the white tassels on Lloyd's shirt go through the sword handles all of the time. I know it's small, but they could've changed it. |

It may do but since I was so gripped on ToS seeing the prospect of seeing how things have changed in that world makes me very excited. |
