Game Title: Pokémon Diamond and Pearl
Number of Players: Millions around the world at the same time
Price: Ł29.99
Release: July 27 2007
Console: DS

Pokémon. There are three types of Pokémon players in the world. A) The 10 and unders who play for the fun and pretty colours with their friends, B) The 'smart' players who blast through the main game so they can EV train etc. and become the best of the best and C) The people who play it for the fun and pretty colours but are not under ten and therefore rather than cute it's disturbing.

As part of group C, it is my duty to inform you that Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are just exactly what you expect: Pokémon games. Does that mean they're childish? Are you kidding? A game in which you pit violent and ravinous monsters against each other where the winner takes half the opponents cash? Where the monsters are sealed in tiny metal spheres and only let out to battle or, worse, for use in doing hard labour suh as breaking rocks, cutting down trees or carrying their owner across the sea? Yes, very childish indeed.

I'm not going to try and tell you that the storyline is deep and meaningful. Please. it's the same old pokécrap; You set out on an adventure to become the greatest Pokémon trainer in the world by becoming Pokémon league champion, but along the way you accidently save the world from an evil organization and don't mind that you aren't given any sort of reward. It's gripping, to be honest. In RBY you had Team Rocket, who weren't really out for WORLD domination, they just wanted to be rich, in GSC you had... well you had Team Rocket again, in Ruby and Sapphire there was either Team Aqua or Magma (though if you wanted a truly great storyline experience, you had to get emerald which had both teams vying for control of the world) and in Diamond and Pearl you have Team Galactic. Now, for once, you have a team that you know isn't just evil, they're downright mad. LOOK AT THEIR UNIFORMS! Team Rocket might have looked bad, but YEESH!

Along the way, you build up a team of Pokémon (up to six at a time) which you need to train up to defeat just about everyone in the world. There is a strange law in the Pokémon world (other than the 4-directions-only walking law) that says if you are seen by another trainer you MUST fight them. Apparently, different trainers have different ranges of sight, so you may have to walk right in front of their face for them to catch sight of you. Apparently these laws ONLY apply to others, that or you have REALLY bad eyesight since walking into people doesn't garner you battle rights, you have to actually talk to them.

As for in battle itself, the DS really lends itself well to the battle system. Touch screen attack choosing is FTW, seriously. There's also a whole new array of attacks to choose from, as well as Pokémon, and now Attack and Special Attack damage is decided by how the attack itself works, rather than by type. It's pretty cool once you get used to it. As for how the battles look, the attacks have been given a complete overhaul, and as for Pokémon sprites, the difference in appearence for some depending on gender is clever and adds a whole new element to the game.

Outside of battles, the game looks great too. The mining city of Oreburgh, early on in the game, is a testament to this, with the mine cart tracks overhead... it's just amazing. The gyms are incredible too, making use of the 3D capabilities of the DS to make compelling puzzles that require careful thought, such as the one in Canalave City... but I'll leave you to find out what I mean by that.

The game is not perfect, though. Yes, it is still baned by the curse of the Hidden Machines. You need these bad boys in order to continue throughout the game, but unfortunately, in battles, they're pretty damn useless. (Exceptions are Surf and Waterfall... Strength and Rock Climb are just let down by being Normal type) Seriously, Defog? It's rubbish and unnecessary, even outside of battle. Finding your way through the fog is EASY.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are great additions to the Pokémon Series. Online battles and trading are what the series has been dying for for ages. With 107 new Pokémon to catch (A grand total of 497 now-I know, it's immense) and all new SUPER CONTESTS you'll be playing this game until... well, until the next Pokémon games come out. Pokémon Plastic and Rubber anyone?

Score: 9.6/10
