Sensible Soccer is a name that will bring back fond memories for many veteran gamers, who first played this game over a decade ago on the Amiga. However, since then, the football genre has developed considerably, and now, unfortunately, Sensible Soccer 2006 is utterly outclassed by the currently more mainstream soccer games, the FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer series. That said, Sensible Soccer 2006 delivers a very different experience to any other current football games across any platform, which offers great pick-up-and-playability. However, the total lack of depth to the game is a nuisance, and there are a number of small annoyances which would have improved the game no end had they been removed.

Sensible Soccer is definitely a game aimed at the less-hardcore football game fanatics. It takes place from a slightly angled birds-eye perspecive, to allow as wide a view of the pitch as possible. The game offers a very simple interface, with movement performed with the left stick, passing with X and kicking with the O button. It's very easy to get used to, even for people who don't play many games. The game also encourages a much more precise passing system, where the direction the analogue stick is pointing is the way the ball will travel when kicked. Players of PES and FIFA will find this tricky to get used to, yet this is perhaps one of the most unique factors of the game. This, combined with the ability to put massive curve on the ball at will by holding the analogue stick, allows for some truly incredible goals, simply not possible on other football games. Other neat little additions, such as the ability to move your goalie with the right stick, add an extra dimension to your defense, allowing for much more tactical defensive strategies. These factors make Sensible Soccer 2006 an incredibly satisfying experince. At first, anyway.

A 'Build your own Team' mode is also available in this game, although due to the rather clunky meuns and long loading times the game seems to suffer with, it can take a good half hour to create the team you are looking for. However, different players' stats cannot be changed, only their appearances and names, as well as the team kit. It's a neat addition, but one that would have been so much better had the game been developed more and not rushed to be released before the World Cup.

The key problem with Sensible Soccer 2006 is the utterly abysmal AI. There is only one difficulty level, which can be mastered in probably an hour or so. After that, you'll be winning every single one-player match you play by at least five goals. Despite the fact that this was clearly supposed to be a multiplayer game, it's very disappointing that more effort was not put into the single player game. Whilst there is a number of things to unlock, and many different tourneys to win to unlock these new stadiums and balls, it just becomes boring because it's so ridiculously easy. This means that the only decent gameplay you are likely to get out of the game is from the multiplayer mode. This is great fun, although I wouldn't recommend buying the game for the multiplayer alone. It's a shame that no online mode was included either, as the ability to always have a half-decent opponent to play against would have been such a great addition for anyone who has their PS2 connected to the internet.

There are, however, a number of small niggling faults with the gameplay which fail to disappear even in multiplayer mode. The most obvious of these are the goalkeepers. They will often save a shot which they are nowhere near, and they often seem incapable of stopping gentle shots, as they quite often just roll past. The keeper also seems to dislike diving for the ball- most of the time he will do a miracle jump to the other side of the goal, somehow keeping his body completely vertical throughout the jump. It looks unbelievably stupid. The goalies also irritate when corners come up, as the ball magically seems to morph into their hands whenever they get within a certain distance of it.

The inability to change players is also a bit of a nuisance. Often, it will switch to a player who is clearly in a much worse position for a tackle than another player, but as you are completely unable to choose which player to use when playing to defend, you just have to go with what the computer chooses. Whilst most of the time this is OK, it is common that your opponents will score due to seemingly poor defending that was actually entirely the CPU's fault.

The graphics aren't awful, but the fields pretty much lack any detail whatsoever, and the players also look pretty bland. However, if the cartoony style appeals to you, then they aren't too bad. However, more attention to detail would have been nice, and probably would have been included if the game hadn't been rushed to launch.

Unfortunately, the sound in this game just cannot compete to any other football game on the market at the present time. The total lack of any commentary, and pretty much no other sound effects either bar the crowd cheering when a goal is scored, makes the game feel a bit cheap and nasty. It's not a problem for me, as I generally play with the sound off. But the sound is definitely a serious turn-off for this game.

Overall, this is just another game that decided to capitalise on the previous successes of the franchise, without really coming up with a decent game of it's own. Sure, it's got some nice ideas, but they were mostly poorly implemented or ruined by other errors in the game. All of these are symptoms of a rushed game. Codemasters, take heed.

Sound 3

Lasting Appeal 5

Overall score: 4

Additional comments: Maybe worth it if you could pick it up for 99p or so somewhere. Otherwise, it's one to avoid. Try the older games instead,
