42 All Time Classics is the sort of game that would only work on the DS. By combining simple, easy to master games with the touch screen interface, and an imcredible 8 player multiplayer mode (including wifi) Nintendo have got a hit on their hands. And it's all at a budget price of £20.

The games in 42 All Time Classics are split up into eight sections. These are: Basic card games, Intermediate card games, Advanced card games, Basic board games, Advanced board games, Variety games, Action games and single player games. Most of the games included play identically to their real-life counterparts (Except action games) and most of them are great fun.

There are 18 card games you can play in 42 All Time Classics (6 basic, 7 intermediate, 5 advanced) These are- Old Maid, Spit, I doubt it (AKA cheat) Sevens, Memory, Pig, Blackjack, Hearts, President, Rummy, Seven Bridge, Last Card, Last card plus, Five card draw, Texas Hold 'em poker, Nap, Spades and Contract Bridge. Whilst some of these games are fun, such as Spit and Blackjack, the computer does have a tendency to cheat on some of the games that require luck or guesswork (such as I doubt it) However, card games are a blsat in multiplayer, even if the single player is slightly off the pace.

There are 7 basic board games you can play. These are- Checkers, Chinese Checkers, Dots and boxes (AKA squares) Hasami Shogi, Turncoat, Connect 5 and Grid attack (AKA battleships) These games are all great fun, and are very easy to pick up if you do not know the rules. Hasami Shogi in particular stands out as a fun game that not many people know of. Grid Attack suffers from the same problem as some of the card games, in that CPU players are very lucky with their 'guesses'. However, none of the other games in this selection suffer from any serious problems, and the multiplayer is good fun, although not many of them support more than two players.

The advanced board games you can play are Chess, Shogi, Field Tactics (AKA Stratego) , Ludo and Backgammon. Chess and Field Tactics are brilliant, and Shogi would be probably be good, but I have no idea how to play. However, Ludo and Backgammon suffer from the cheating computer syndrome, as the games involve dice, making cheating overly easy for the CPU. This makes these games fairly boring to play. Chess and Field Tactics are still brilliant to play though.

The variety games you can play include Koi-Koi (AKA Hanafuda) Shake the Bottle, Dominoes and Word Balloon (AKA Hangman) Whilst dominoes and Koi-Koi are fun, the other two just aren't the sort of games you would want to play for more than ten seconds.

The action game category includes Bowling, Darts, Billiards, Balance and Takeover. These all use touch screen control to play. For example, bowling is done by sliding your stylus vertically along the touch screen to bowl. Darts is done by doing the same thing to fire at a dartboard on the top screen. Balance is done by using the stylus to drop bricks onto a wobbly platform. Billiards and Takeover both involve using the stylus to knock certain objects into specific areas. All the games in the Action category are great fun, except for Billiards. The game feels nothing like Billards itself, and the physics are completely wrong. However, all of the good (AKA not billiards) action games support 8-player madness, so these are likely to be the games you'll play the most with friends.

Single player games included are Escape (AKA Rush Hour) Solitaire, and Mahjong Solitaire. These are all alright, but they can be very frustrating at times. Also, no multiplayer means this is one of the categories you will generally not bother playing.

The main single player game is split up into two parts- Stamp mode and mission mode. Stamp mode is fairly forgiving and allows you to pass a game, even if you can't beat it, after you lose three times. Obviously, if you beat it, you can go to the next game without having to play it again. However, the mission mode is much less merciful. There are thirty missions to beat, spread across different games. By beating them you unlock some different menu music, but some of the missions are very hard and present a challenge. Most of them, apart from backgammon, can be beaten by practice at the game and a few attempts at the mission. Backgammon is the only ridiculously hard one, as it relies on dice rolls, making it near-impossible to win by the required margin.

There is also a 'free play' mode, which allows you to play any of the games as much as you like, with the settings, rules and difficulty up to you. By beating games a certain amount of times in this mode, you unlock new 'themes' for that game. This is a neat little addition, and it really adds to the longevity of the game.

However, in 42 All Time Classics, Multiplayer is where it's at. You can play either single cart download play, or over the wifi connection, with eight players! It's incredible, the simple pleasures of wifi board and card games are surprising. Also, the additional bonus of in-game pictochat (with colour) is a wonderful addition. My best experience ever on my DS came from 6 player Bowling matches with some mates. Class.

Unfortunately, this is only available in friend mode. In normal multiplayer wifi mode, you choose a game, and see how many people join in. Whilst this works fine for some of the more played games (Mainly the action category) It is very hard to find opponents for some of the other games, especially some of the more obscure card games and the variety games. In game, you cannot utilise pictochat, but you can talk using a number of preset phrases available. This is certainly better than nothing, but it seems a bit lame in comparison to pictochat on offer in friend mode.

The graphics in-game certainly do the job, but they are nothing special. However, you wouldn't expect dazzling graphics for board games, so this isn't really a problem. Sound is slightly naff, but at least it isn't so load and in-your-face that it isn't distracting you from your game.

Overall, 42 All Time Classics is a good game to play on your own, but it is the best game out there for multiplayer gaming, online and off. If you know other people with DS'es, or you are able to connect to Nintendo WFC, you need this game.
